Hands-On LEGO STEM Workshops for Primary Schools: A Fun and Creative Way to Learn

As a teacher with over 25 years of experience and the winner of the Channel 4 LEGO Masters competition, I’ve had the privilege of seeing first hand how LEGO can be a powerful tool for learning and creativity. As part of my business, The Brick Consultant, I create and deliver engaging, hands-on LEGO workshops in schools, libraries, and museums. My passion for learning through play has led me to design a series of LEGO STEM workshops specifically for Years 3-6. These workshops are aimed at encouraging both children and parents to collaborate while exploring key concepts in a fun and interactive way.

If you’re looking for a unique educational experience for your primary school, I’d love to bring one of my LEGO workshops to your school. I am based in the North West of England in Chester and can travel locally around the region to deliver workshops.

Let me explain how these workshops work and why they’ve been so successful.

What Are LEGO STEM Workshops?

Each workshop is carefully designed to make maths and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concepts come to life through LEGO. I’ve developed four distinct workshops for different age groups (Years 3-6), each one targeting a core area of STEM education while allowing students and their parents to learn together. Here’s a quick breakdown of the themes and activities:

  • Year 3: The Ocean and the Environment
Students build LEGO fish, simple mechanisms, and even a large planet Earth mosaic. This workshop is all about teamwork and environmental awareness.
  • Year 4: Scale Building
In this workshop, children learn about measurements and scale by building LEGO Minions at different sizes. They’ll engage in individual and group challenges, developing a deeper understanding of scale and proportion.
  • Year 5: Structures
Students explore geometry, weight, and triangulation by constructing and testing LEGO bridges. They’ll compete in a hands-on challenge to see which bridge can support the most weight.
  • Year 6: Soapbox Derby Racing
This workshop introduces concepts like aerodynamics, drag, and weight through building and racing LEGO vehicles. Children test their designs, modify them, and record data to optimize their creations.

Why LEGO Workshops Are Perfect for Primary Schools

These workshops are designed to be highly engaging, fun, and educational. As a teacher and a passionate advocate for learning through play, I’ve seen how LEGO can inspire children to think creatively while reinforcing key academic skills.

The workshops aim to strengthen core skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and spatial awareness, all through a hands-on, enjoyable experience. Involving parents in the learning process helps build stronger school-community bonds and encourages parental engagement in their children’s education. During the workshops, I encourage parents to embrace their inner child and I receive really positive feedback about how much parents have enjoyed working alongside their children.

Each session lasts two hours and is designed to work with a class size of up to 16 students, along with their parents or guardians. It’s ideal to run these workshops across a full day, with half the class in the morning and half in the afternoon, ensuring that every student has the chance to participate. Though I encourage parental involvement, I understand that this may not always be possible, and I ensure there’s flexibility for children to team up with other families.

How Can Your School Get Involved?

I’m passionate about making these workshops available to as many students as possible. In fact, I offer schools the opportunity to meet with me in person before booking to discuss the best setup, dates, and logistics. I’m also happy to attend assemblies to help generate excitement around the workshops and encourage parental participation.

By hosting a LEGO workshop, your school will provide an engaging and educational experience that helps students develop crucial STEM skills while having fun with their parents. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
