Mosaic Brick Build: Afterglow at Chester Zoo
During the last two summer seasons, I partnered with Chester Zoo to deliver a large-scale, hands-on LEGO mosaic experience as part of their Afterglow campaign. Across 15 summer evenings, from 3pm till 8pm, visitors were invited to explore the zoo after hours and take part in a range of family-friendly activites, with our collaborative brick building attracting many families, groups and individuals.
Each day, visitors helped construct a giant mosaic inspired by the zoo’s conservation work and the animals they care for. Over the course of the campaign, we built, dismantled and rebuilt more than 250,000 bricks, with thousands of visitors contributing to the final artworks. Many visitors who had taken part in 2025 returned with excitement to see the new designs and contribute to the build once again.
To ensure younger visitors were included, we also ran a dedicated DUPLO® activity for children under three, inviting them to build a giraffe to join our growing herd. This addition created a welcoming space where everyone, regardless of age, could take part in the fun.
The response from visitors was overwhelmingly positive. Footfall remained consistently high throughout all 15 sessions and Chester Zoo recorded its highest single-day visitor numbers during our time onsite. Each mosaic design was created bespoke for Chester Zoo, reflecting their brand values and conservation messaging. This is a core part of my service: I design and deliver custom mosaic builds tailored to each venue, ensuring every installation feels unique, meaningful and aligned with the client’s branding.
